ജനവാസ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ വളരെ സാധാരണമായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നതും, മനുഷ്യർക്ക് ഏറ്റവും സുപരിചിതവുമായ പച്ച നിറത്തിലുള്ള വലിയ കല്ലൻതുമ്പി. വിദഗ്ദ്ധനായൊരു ഇരപിടിയനാണ്. പ്രാണികളെയും, തുമ്പികളെയും, സ്വവർഗ്ഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടവരെ(Cannibalism)ത്തന്നെയും തരം കിട്ടിയാൽ ആഹാരമാക്കും.അധികം ഉയരത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കാറില്ല. താഴെ പുല്ലുകൾക്കിടയിലും പച്ചിലകളോട് ചേർന്നുമിരുന്നാൽ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ പച്ചനിറം കാരണം എളുപ്പം തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ കഴിയില്ല. വലിയ ജീവികൾ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ചുറ്റിനും പറന്നുയരുന്ന പ്രാണികളെ പിടിക്കാനായി ജീവികളെ അനുഗമിക്കുന്നതായി കാണാം.
