A very rare variety of damselfly was found in Thumboor (Thrissur Dt, Kerala, South India) after a long time. The damselfly scientifically named ‘Platylestes Platystylus’ is from the family Lestidae commonly known as the spreadwings.
This species is known from old records from West Bengal in India, Myanmar (Fraser 1933), Thailand (Hämäläinen and Pinratana1999), and Laos (Yokoi2001). There are from recent record Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Kerala - South India.
It is a small dull-coloured dragonfly of the size of Lestes. Its prothorax and thorax are in palest khaki brown colour, paler at the sides, and pruinosed white beneath. There are a large number of black spots on the thorax. Its wings are palely enfumed with short and broad pterostigma having white or pale inner and outer ends. Its abdomen is olivaceous to warm reddish-brown in colour with black apical rings on each segment. The eyes and thorax of adult damselflies are in bright green colour. Anal appendages are whitish with the superiors black at the base, curling in at apices to meet each other. Inferior appendages are about half the length and thick at the base.
The Female closely resembles the male in most respects, differing mainly in sexual characters. Anal appendages are yellow, blackish-brown at the base, and as long as a segment.
British entomologist Lt. colonel F.C.Fraser had recorded to have found this variety of damselfly in West Bengal in 1933. Later, it was found by me from Thumboor village in the 2015-18 period. Although I had already found a female of it, I could not be identified.
The black spots on the thorax and the whitish lines on both sides of the black spot on its transparent wings are the major features of this damselfly that distinguishes it from other varieties. This damselfly was objectively identified by Mr Nopadon Makban, a renowned entomologist from Thailand.
ചേരാചിറകൻ കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സൂചിത്തുമ്പിയാണ് പ്ലാറ്റിലെസ്റ്റസ് പ്ലാറ്റിസ്റ്റൈലസ്(Platylestes platystylus). വല്ലപ്പോഴുമുള്ള രാത്രി നിരീക്ഷണത്തിനിടയിൽ ഇതിന്റെയൊരു ആൺത്തുമ്പിയെ 2018 മാർച്ച് ഇരുപത്തൊന്നിനു 9 മണിക്ക് ശേഷം തൃശൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ തുമ്പൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ വച്ച് കണ്ടെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.1933 ൽ പശ്ചിമബംഗാളിൽ വച്ച് എഫ്.സി.ഫ്രേസർ കണ്ടെത്തിയതിനു ശേഷം പിന്നീടിപ്പോഴാണ് ഇതിനെ വീണ്ടും കണ്ടതായി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. 2015ലും, 2017ലും ഇതിന്റെ പെൺത്തുമ്പിയെ കണ്ടിരുന്നെങ്കിലും തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. ഇത്തവണ ഇതിന്റെ ചെറുവാലിന്റെയും മുതുകിന്റെയും ഉരസ്സിന്റെയും ചിത്രങ്ങൾ വളരെ വ്യക്തമായി പകർത്താൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. എങ്കിലും ഒരുപാട് കാലമായി കാണാതിരുന്ന ഒരു ഇനമായതുകൊണ്ടു ആരും ഒരു ഉറപ്പിച്ചൊരു തിരിച്ചറിയലിനു തയ്യാറായില്ല. എന്റെ സംശയങ്ങൾ തീരാതായപ്പോൾ ശ്രീ. ജീവൻ ജോസ് ആണ് എന്നെ വളരെ ആത്മാർത്ഥമായി സഹായിക്കുന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹം ഫ്രേസറുടെ പുസ്തകം അരിച്ചുപെറുക്കി ഒരു ധാരണയിലെത്തുകയും ഏഷ്യയിലെ പ്രശസ്ത തുമ്പിനിരീക്ഷകനായ ശ്രീ.നൊപ്പാഡോൺ മാക്ബൻ എന്ന തായ്‌ലാന്റുകാരൻ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനെ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ സഹിതം സമീപിക്കുവാൻ നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അദ്ദേഹം ചിത്രങ്ങൾ പരിശോധിച്ച് ഇത് "പ്ലാറ്റിലെസ്റ്റസ് പ്ലാറ്റിസ്റ്റൈലസ്" ആണെന്ന് ഉറപ്പിച്ചു പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ഉരസ്സിലെ കറുത്തപൊട്ടുകളും ചിറകിലെ കറുത്തപൊട്ടിനിരുവശത്തും കാണുന്ന നേർത്ത വെളുത്ത വരകളും ഇവയെ മറ്റു ചേരാചിറകന്മാരിൽനിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമാക്കുന്നു.നീലക്കണ്ണി ചേരാച്ചിറകനുമായി സാദൃശ്യം തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും നീലക്കണ്ണിയുടെ മുതുകിലെ പ്രത്യേകാകൃതിയുള്ള കല ഇവയെ തമ്മിൽ എളുപ്പം തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നതിനു സഹായിക്കുന്നു. ചെറുവാലിന്റെ ഘടന ഒഴിച്ചുനിർത്തിയാൽ ആൺത്തുമ്പിയും പെൺത്തുമ്പിയും തമ്മിൽ പ്രകടമായ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങളില്ല.
